Functional Silicone Oil: Giving Material Surfaces a Durable Functional Layer

Table of Content [Hide]

In the field of material modification, many additives face the same challenge: they perform well at first, but the effect gradually disappears after repeated use. Wiping, friction, solvent cleaning and aging can cause the functional layer to weaken or detach, making the surface performance short-lived.

Is there a way to make the modification effect become part of the material surface, rather than simply staying on it?

Betely functional silicone oil provides an effective answer. Through chemical reaction, it can permanently anchor functional silicone segments onto material surfaces, helping create longer-lasting surface properties.

    What Is Functional Silicone Oil?

Functional silicone oil is a type of reactive silicone oil designed for surface modification. Its molecular structure is special because the two ends have different functions:

    • One end is a silicone chain, which provides low surface energy and helps improve smoothness, water repellency, stain resistance and easy-clean performance.

    • The other end is a reactive functional group, such as hydroxyl, acrylate or methoxy groups, which can chemically react with substrates or resin systems to form strong covalent bonding and achieve permanent anchoring.

Unlike difunctional silicone oil, where both ends can react and may easily cause crosslinking or viscosity increase, mono-functional silicone oil has only one reactive site. After grafting, the silicone chain is arranged on the material surface in a pendant brush-like structure.

This structure allows the low-surface-energy silicone segment to fully deliver smooth, hydrophobic and anti-fouling effects, while avoiding excessive viscosity increase or gelation in the system. As a result, it provides better processing stability.

Conventional silicone oil mainly depends on physical adsorption. After wiping or solvent cleaning, the surface effect can quickly decline. By contrast, Betely functional silicone oil can be chemically anchored to the material network or substrate surface through covalent bonding, offering significantly better resistance to wiping, solvents and aging.

    Four Core Product Series

Betely functional silicone oil covers four main functional group systems to meet different application needs.

Hydroxyl Silicone Oil — Suitable for PU Systems

Hydroxyl groups can react with isocyanate groups in PU systems, permanently introducing silicone chains into the PU molecular network.

    Typical applications include:

    • PU synthetic leather and elastomers: improving smooth hand feel, abrasion resistance and hydrolysis resistance.

    • Coatings and inks: reducing defects such as craters and orange peel, while improving hydrophobic, stain-resistant and easy-clean properties.

    • Epoxy resin modification: reducing internal stress, improving crack resistance and providing excellent release performance.

    • Textile finishing: giving fabrics a soft, fluffy feel while improving antistatic performance.

Trimethoxy Silicone Oil — Suitable for Inorganic Filler Dispersion and Adhesion Improvement

After hydrolysis, trimethoxy groups can form strong chemical bonds with hydroxyl groups on inorganic surfaces such as glass and metal. This makes trimethoxy silicone oil an effective organic-inorganic bridge.

    Typical applications include:

    • Inorganic filler coupling: helping calcium carbonate, talc, silica and other fillers disperse evenly without agglomeration or sedimentation.

    • Adhesion promotion: helping coatings bond firmly to difficult substrates such as glass and metal.

    • Thermal interface materials: supporting thermal management applications in electric vehicle batteries and high-performance chips.

    • RTV silicone rubber adhesion improvement: enhancing bonding strength to metal and glass substrates.

Acrylate Silicone Oil — Suitable for UV-Curable Systems

The acrylate double bond can participate in UV free-radical polymerization, permanently incorporating silicone chains into the UV-curable resin network.

    Typical applications include:

    • UV coatings for mobile phone cases: improving surface smoothness, anti-fingerprint performance and scratch resistance.

    • UV inks: improving leveling performance and creating a smoother, less tacky printed surface.

    • 3D printing photosensitive resins: reducing brittleness while improving release performance and surface smoothness.

    • Optical protective films: helping achieve low haze, hydrophobic and stain-resistant properties.

Hydrogen Silicone Oil — Suitable for Silicone Rubber Performance Adjustment and Hydrosilylation Reactions

Hydrogen silicone oil can participate in crosslinking through hydrosilylation reactions, helping adjust the hardness and elasticity of silicone rubber. It can also react with compounds containing double bonds to prepare various modified silicone oils.

    Typical applications include:

    • Liquid silicone rubber (LSR) hardness adjustment: reducing crosslinking density to obtain low-hardness and high-elasticity products.

    • Multifunctional textile finishing agents: giving fibers excellent softness and smooth hand feel.

    • Adhesive modification: improving flexibility, peel strength and resistance to high and low temperatures.

    • Synthesis of defoamers, leveling agents and other additives: preparing polyether-modified or alkyl-modified silicone oils through hydrosilylation.
